The risks of identity theft
Personal information is a very sensitive matter. You use it to buy things, do business, travel, request credit for various purposes, and almost anything else. You could say that your personal information defines who you are, at least when it comes to business, legal and financial matters. Sadly, many people realize the importance of keeping their personal information safe when it’s already too late, i.e. after being victims of identity theft.
When other people steal your personal information, they are stealing your power to purchase things, get loans and make other kinds of financial moves. And of course, you are expected to pay for all that things, because it’s your name the one that was used. People that don’t detect this kind of activity on time will quickly ran out of credit, reaching bankruptcy in a very short time, while the criminals who stole their identity get to enjoy all the benefits of having someone else paying for their actions.
But, besides negatively affecting your credit, identity theft can cause problems that are much worse to solve. Imagine that someone gets into a store and buys things using your name and personal information. Then, that person decides to rob the store. Who do you think that will be held responsible for that crime? Who will be get caught by the police force? Well, no other than you.
There had been reported cases of innocent people being legally prosecuted and even incarcerated for crimes committed by other people using their names. This gets worse if you consider that people who steal other people’s identities are rarely devoted to doing just this kind of fraud, but in fact are very fond of committing much worse crimes.
Keeping your personal information safe is the best thing you can do to protect your name from being stolen and your integrity to be taken. Remember, if you are a victim of identity theft you will be forced to prove you are innocent, because everyone will be going to consider you a criminal. Unless you can get unarguable evidence, nobody will believe you.
Proving your innocence may be a very difficult thing that takes a very long time. And even if you are lucky enough to manage to prove you are an identity theft victim, I can guarantee that your life will not be the same as before; being accused of a crime always has consequences, there is always someone ready to point a finger at you. There will be all kind of nasty rumors in your neighborhood; your kids will be humiliated by other kids at school, and so on. All because somebody else tainted your good name.
